Exceldor Cooperative is currently hiring an Animal Welfare Specialist. Reporting to the Animal Welfare Director, the incumbent shall develop, define and update corporate animal welfare policies. The Animal Welfare Specialist ensures harmonization in the enforcement of Exceldor Cooperative’s regulations, standards and policies across its hatcheries, producers, carriers, catching crews, plants, subsidiaries, joint ventures and co-producers. The Animal Welfare Specialist shall serve as a reference and support for the entire Exceldor organization in terms of animal welfare.

Responsabilities

  • Develop, establish, define and update policies, programs and protocols related to animal welfare for Exceldor Cooperative based on regulations, quality standards, client requirements and industry best practices.
  • Develop, update, monitor, validate, reassess performance indicators related to animal welfare in compliance with laws and regulations, standards, client requirements and Exceldor policies.
  • Plan animal welfare audits for hatcheries, producers, carriers, catching crews, plants, subsidiaries, joint ventures and co-producers.
  • Audit Exceldor's partners by applying corporate audit plans in compliance with the requirements of the animal welfare policy, such as: farm audit plan (breeders), catching crew audit plan, bird loading audit plan (carriers), in-plant bird reception audit plan.
  • Enforce proper application of good practices for bird preparation (from hatchery to processing plant) while continuously delivering on the high standards of our partners and all involved stakeholders.
  • Develop and conduct training sessions for employees and other stakeholders such as carriers, catching crews and producers. Educate employees and other stakeholders and explain them Exceldor’s policies and programs, new developments, changes, harmonization, standards, regulations, and client requirements.
  • Promote the animal welfare vision and culture both internally and externally.
  • Be a reference and support the team when it comes to animal welfare (laws, regulations, standards, policies) for the entre organization.
  • Represent the cooperative and promote the animal welfare vision and defend the interests of Exceldor cooperative.
  • Update their knowledge regarding regulations, standards and industry best practices.

Required qualifications

  • A veterinary medicine degree and a licence to practice in Canada is an asset
  • Knowledge of the avian field and of food industry hygiene rules ;
  • Extensive knowledge in animal welfare regulations, requirements and certifications ;
  • Extensive knowledge of animal production systems and audit systems ;
  • Being able to work under pressure and with changing priorities ;
  • Very good knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point) ;
  • Holding the PAACO certification will be considered a significant asset ;
  • Native English proficiency is required; French and/or Spanish fluency will be considered an asset.
